Best Wire Brands in India 2026 — BIS-Certified Manufacturer Comparison

There is no single "best" wire brand in India — the right choice depends on the application. A standard FR house wire is sufficient for a low-rise home; a high-rise tower covered under the National Building Code (NBC) 2016 mandates FR-LSH; a hospital, airport or data centre needs HFFR (zero-halogen) per IS 17048:2018; an automation panel uses IEC-spec flexible cable. This page is a buyer's comparison of seven BIS-licensed manufacturers serving the Indian market — Finolex, Havells, KEI, Lapp India, National Cables, Polycab, and RR Kabel — listed alphabetically with their licence numbers, the IS standards they cover, the flame grades they make, and the use cases each fits. Use the matrix below, then verify any CM/L number on bis.gov.in before you buy.

How we compared (objective criteria only)

The seven brands are presented in alphabetical order — never ranked by score, market share or founding year. Every cell in the comparison matrix is verifiable from a public source (the brand's own datasheet, the BIS licence portal, NSE/BSE filings, or company annual reports). We do not assign stars, "winner" badges or "best-for" labels in the table — those decisions belong to the buyer and are addressed in the How to choose section.

How to choose the right brand for your application

The honest answer: pick the flame grade your installation actually requires under the relevant code, then choose any of the BIS-licensed brands in that grade that fits your budget and availability. Use this decision frame:

  • Use case 1 — Residential, up to G+3 (low-rise homes, independent houses). Any BIS-certified FR house wire is compliant. Finolex FR, Havells Life Line+ S3, KEI HOMECAB, National Cables FR, Polycab Green Wire (FR variant) or RR Kabel Superex all clear IS 694:2010.
  • Use case 2 — Residential G+4 and above, commercial buildings, malls, hotels. The National Building Code (NBC) 2016 — Part 4 (Fire & Life Safety) and the model state Fire Service rules effectively require FR-LSH in escape routes, common shafts and high-occupancy buildings. Choose Havells Life Guard, KEI CONFLAME, Polycab Green Wire HR-FR-LSH, RR Kabel Firex, or equivalent FR-LSH SKUs from Finolex / National Cables.
  • Use case 3 — Hospitals, airports, metros, data centres, public-assembly buildings. Specifying engineers typically demand HFFR / ZHFR to IS 17048:2018 for zero acid-gas emission in fire conditions. Havells Life Shield, KEI BANFIRE, Polycab HFFR, RR Kabel Firex LS0H — and equivalent HFFR ranges from Finolex, National Cables — all qualify.
  • Use case 4 — Solar plants, EV charging, industrial LT/HT distribution. Move from IS 694 (PVC house wire) to IS 7098 (XLPE) for power cables, or specialised solar DC cable to TÜV/EN 50618. Finolex, Havells, KEI, Polycab, RR Kabel and National Cables all manufacture LT power cables to IS 1554-1 / IS 7098-1.
  • Use case 5 — Automation, OEM machinery, drag-chain, robotics. This is Lapp territory — IEC 60227 / EN 50525 flexible cables (ÖLFLEX, UNITRONIC). Indian IS-mark house wire is not the right product for these duty cycles.

Whatever you choose, prioritise four checks: (1) the BIS licence is active on the portal, (2) the voltage rating printed on the cable matches the application (1100 V for LT, 650/1100 V for house wire), (3) the conductor class matches use (Class 2 stranded for fixed conduit, Class 5 flexible for appliances), and (4) the IS standard with year is printed on the jacket.

How to verify any brand's claims (a 4-step procedure)

  1. BIS portal lookup. Go to and search by CM/L number or by manufacturer name. Confirm the licence is active, the standard is the one claimed (e.g. IS 694:2010), and the factory address matches.
  2. Physical ISI mark. Genuine BIS-licensed wire has the ISI mark printed on the outer sheath at regular intervals — along with the CM/L number and the IS standard with year. Counterfeit or unbranded wire often omits the year.
  3. IS year printed on the jacket. IS 694:2010 is the current PVC house-wire standard; IS 17048:2018 is the current HFFR standard. If a roll claims compliance but the printed year is older or missing, treat as suspicious.
  4. Cross-check with a licensed electrician. Ask the contractor to confirm the brand and CM/L on the coil before installation; reject any roll that has been re-spooled or is missing the manufacturer's printed marking.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best wire brand for home wiring in India?
There is no single best — for a typical home up to G+3, any BIS-licensed FR wire from the seven brands above is compliant with IS 694:2010. Finolex, Havells Life Line+ S3, KEI HOMECAB, National Cables FR, Polycab Green Wire and RR Kabel Superex are all valid choices. The decision usually comes down to local availability, dealer trust and price per metre.
Which wire is best for AC connection?
For a 1.5-ton split AC running at ~10 A, use 2.5 sqmm single-core copper FR or FR-LSH wire to IS 694:2010. For a 2-ton AC or longer cable run, step up to 4 sqmm. Always use a dedicated MCB on a separate circuit. All seven brands cover 2.5 sqmm and 4.0 sqmm in their house-wire ranges.
Is Polycab better than Havells?
Both hold active BIS licences against IS 694:2010 (Polycab CM/L 7340134; Havells CM/L 7830011) and both manufacture FR, FR-LSH/HRFR and HFFR grades. Polycab is the largest by revenue; Havells is part of a broader electricals group with a wider retail footprint. On the wire itself — same standard, same conductor purity (≥99.97% ETP copper), same voltage rating — they are technically equivalent. Choose by price and availability.
Are all 7 brands BIS certified?
Six of the seven hold BIS licences against IS 694:2010 for PVC-insulated house wire — Finolex (CM/L 7340023), Havells (7830011), KEI (7650015), National Cables (8800140116), Polycab (7340134) and RR Kabel (8340052). Lapp India manufactures to IEC 60227 / EN 50525 for industrial and automation applications, which is the relevant international standard for that segment — it does not market its core ÖLFLEX range under IS 694 because the use-case is different.
What is the difference between Polycab Green Wires and Havells Life Line+ S3?
Both are heat-resistant flame-retardant single-core house wires to IS 694:2010, rated for 85 °C continuous operation. Polycab Green Wire HR-FR-LSH-LF adds low-smoke halogen-restricted and lead-free chemistry as standard across the line. Havells Life Line+ S3 is the HRFR tier within Havells' three-line structure (S3 sits below Life Guard FR-LSH and Life Shield HFFR) and is marketed on the S3 low-leakage technology (≤0.01 mA leakage current). For a like-for-like LSH spec, compare Polycab Green Wire to Havells Life Guard.
Which brand is best for hospital wiring?
Hospital, airport and data-centre projects are typically specified to IS 17048:2018 (HFFR / zero-halogen flame retardant) because PVC smoke is acidic and hazardous in evacuation. Suitable HFFR ranges include KEI BANFIRE, Havells Life Shield, Polycab HFFR, RR Kabel Firex LS0H, and equivalent HFFR variants from Finolex and National Cables. The specifying consultant will name the IS 17048 grade in the BoQ.
Which is the most affordable BIS-certified wire brand?
Pricing per metre changes with copper LME and dealer margin, so we publish live brand price lists rather than a static ranking — see the seven /brand/{slug}-price-list pages linked above. As a rule, regional and mid-tier BIS-licensed brands such as National Cables and KEI HOMECAB tend to price below the national premium tier (Polycab Green, Havells Life Line+ S3) for the same 1.5 sqmm and 2.5 sqmm SKUs, but the gap is usually within ₹5–15 per metre.
Where can I buy genuine wire from these brands?
Buy only from the brand's authorised distributor list (each of the six BIS-licensed brands publishes a dealer locator on its official site) or from B2B platforms that disclose source SKU and CM/L. Insist on the original sealed coil with the manufacturer's printed ISI mark, CM/L number and IS year. Reject re-spooled, taped or unprinted coils.
How do I verify a wire is BIS-certified?
Three checks: (a) look for the ISI mark + CM/L number + IS standard with year printed at intervals on the outer sheath; (b) cross-check the CM/L on — the licence should be active and the standard should match what's printed; (c) match the manufacturer name and factory address on the BIS record to the brand on the coil.
Is RR Kabel a reliable wire brand?
RR Kabel Ltd. is a publicly listed company (NSE/BSE: RRKABEL, IPO September 2023), holds an active BIS licence (CM/L 8340052) for IS 694:2010, and its Waghodia plant carries 30+ accreditations including BIS, BASEC, UL, CSA, VDE, Intertek and TÜV Rheinland. By every objective metric — listing status, BIS licence, third-party audits, IS standards held — it is a fully qualified manufacturer. As with any brand, verify the specific CM/L on the coil you receive.
What is HRFR cable and which brands sell it?
HRFR stands for Heat-Resistant Flame-Retardant: PVC house wire qualified to IS 694:2010 with continuous operating temperature raised from 70 °C (standard PVC) to 85 °C and a passing flame-retardant test to IEC 60332-1. All six BIS-licensed brands above sell HRFR — examples: Polycab Green Wire HR-FR-LSH, Havells Life Line+ S3 HRFR, KEI Conflame Green+ HRFR, plus HRFR SKUs from Finolex, National Cables and RR Kabel.
Which brand carries HR-FR-LSH (the highest tier in IS 694:2010)?
HR-FR-LSH combines heat-resistance (85 °C), flame-retardancy (IEC 60332-1) and low-smoke / halogen-restricted chemistry — the top single-product tier inside IS 694:2010 (HFFR moves to IS 17048:2018). The named HR-FR-LSH retail lines are Polycab Green Wire HR-FR-LSH-LF, Havells Life Guard, KEI Conflame Green+, and RR Kabel Firex. Finolex and National Cables market equivalent FR-LSH SKUs in their LSH line; if your specification calls out HR-FR-LSH explicitly, check the printed jacket marking on the coil to confirm the heat-resistant grade is included.
