What is XLPE cable?

XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) insulated cables are manufactured to IS 7098. Part 1 covers cables up to 1.1kV for industrial wiring, solar power plants, and EV infrastructure. Part 2 covers high-tension cables from 3.3kV to 33kV used in power distribution networks, industrial substations, and utility projects. XLPE insulation offers higher temperature rating (90°C continuous) than PVC (70°C), making it preferred for heavy industrial and solar applications.

What is XLPE cable?
XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) cable uses XLPE insulation instead of PVC. It is manufactured to IS 7098 and offers higher temperature rating (90°C vs 70°C for PVC), better short-circuit performance, and longer service life. Used in industrial, solar, and HT power distribution.
What is IS 7098?
IS 7098 is the BIS standard for XLPE insulated cables. Part 1 covers up to 1.1kV. Part 2 covers 3.3kV to 33kV high-tension cables.
What is the difference between XLPE and PVC cable?
XLPE cable (IS 7098) has higher temperature rating (90°C), better short circuit performance, and longer service life than PVC cable (IS 694:2010, 70°C). XLPE is preferred for industrial power, solar, and HT applications. PVC is standard for building wiring.
What cable is used for solar power plants in India?
Solar DC strings use IEC 62930 / IS 16527 UV-resistant DC cable. AC cables from inverter to meter use IS 7098 Part 1 XLPE for LT or IS 7098 Part 2 XLPE for HT connections. IS 694:2010 is not recommended for solar DC applications.
