What is Armoured cable?
Armoured cables are manufactured to IS 1554, which is a distinct standard from IS 694:2010. IS 1554 Part 1 covers PVC insulated, PVC sheathed cables for general fixed installations. IS 1554 Part 2 covers PVC insulated, HOFR (heat and oil-flame retardant) sheathed cables for more demanding environments. Armoured cables use either SWA (steel wire armour) or STA (steel tape armour) for mechanical protection.

What is IS 1554?
IS 1554 is the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for PVC insulated heavy duty electric cables. Part 1 covers PVC sheathed cables for general use. Part 2 covers HOFR sheathed cables for heat and oil-resistant applications. Both are armoured with SWA or STA for mechanical protection.
What is the difference between IS 694:2010 and IS 1554?
IS 694:2010 covers light-duty PVC cables for wiring in buildings. IS 1554 covers heavy-duty cables for power distribution, underground runs, and industrial applications with mechanical protection (armour). They are not interchangeable.
What is SWA and STA armoured cable?
SWA is steel wire armour — individual steel wires wound around the cable for mechanical protection. STA is steel tape armour — steel tape applied in a helical wrap. SWA provides better mechanical protection for direct burial; STA is common for tray-laid and fixed industrial applications.
